What travellers should know before buying a SIM in Mexico
Airport SIM booths are available at major gateways such as Mexico City (MEX), Cancún (CUN), Guadalajara (GDL) and Monterrey (MTY), but the convenience usually comes with higher prices than city stores. If you have time, local carrier shops and larger convenience stores are often better value. In many places, you may be asked for a passport when registering a prepaid line, and some sellers are more helpful than others when it comes to activation.
Top-ups are usually easiest with cash at convenience stores or carrier shops. Foreign cards do not always work reliably on local recharge systems, so it is worth assuming you may need cash for top-ups if you buy a physical SIM. Mobile data generally performs well in tourist hotspots, but speeds can drop on packed beach networks, at festivals and on long stretches of road between towns.
For most visitors, WhatsApp, Google Maps, Uber and airport transfers work well on the major networks. If you are travelling through the Yucatán Peninsula, connection quality is typically strongest around Cancún, Playa del Carmen, Tulum and Mérida, while quieter stretches can be less consistent.
