Cannot activate eSIM error on an iPhone

You might get the following error when you scan your QR code using your iPhone: “Unable to Activate eSIM”

This does not usually mean that the QR code is faulty.

Your iPhone may have downloaded the eSIM service successfully, but is having problems connecting to a mobile network to activate it.

To overcome this:

  1. Make sure Aeroplane Mode is turned OFF. If Aeroplane Mode is on, your iPhone may download the eSIM but will not be able to connect to a mobile network to activate it.
  2. Make sure that you have updated your phone to the latest IOS version ( 16.5.1 or later ).
  3. Check that your iPhone is not carrier-locked or network-locked. Go to Settings -> General -> About -> Network Provider Lock. If it says “No SIM restrictions”, your iPhone is unlocked. If it does not say this, contact the operator that supplied the phone and ask them to unlock it before trying to install the eSIM again.
  4. Scan the QR code again, making sure that you are in a place where you have both Wi-Fi and a good mobile signal, and that you are in a country covered by your eSIM plan.

If the eSIM still does not activate after these steps, please email support@esim.net with your order number, iPhone model, iOS version, the country you are in, and a screenshot of the error.

If you see “Data Plan Cannot Be Added — This code is no longer valid”, this is a different error. It usually means the QR code has already been used or the eSIM has already been downloaded. Please contact support before deleting the eSIM or trying again.
