What is eSIM Auto-Switching and how does it work?
eSIM Auto-Switching is a new feature introduced in Apple’s iOS 26. It allows an iPhone to automatically switch from the user’s primary SIM to a pre-installed travel eSIM, such as Global64, when the device detects that the user has travelled to another country. When the user returns home, the iPhone automatically switches back to the primary SIM.
This feature only works with our Global64 plan and iPhones running iOS 26 or later.
How does it work?
- The user installs and activates the Global64 eSIM on their iPhone before travelling.
- The travel eSIM remains saved but inactive until the user leaves their home country.
- When the iPhone detects entry into a different country which is covered by the Global64 plan, it automatically activates the travel eSIM and starts using it for mobile data
- When the user arrives back in their home country, the iPhone automatically reactivates the primary SIM and disables the travel eSIM.
- In some cases, the user may receive a notification asking them to confirm the switch.
What are the requirements for eSIM Auto-Switching to work?
- iPhone XS or newer
- iOS 26 or later installed
- Travel eSIM (Global64) must be installed and activated at least once using Wi-Fi or mobile data
- Mobile data or Wi-Fi must be available during the initial activation of the eSIM
- Only works with Apple’s software. Android devices do not support automatic switching.
Does the user need to change settings manually while travelling?
No. If eSIM Auto-Switching is enabled and the Global64 eSIM is installed correctly, the switch happens automatically. However, the user can manually enable or disable the travel eSIM from Settings → Cellular if needed.
What happens if eSIM Auto-Switching does not activate automatically?
The user can:
- Go to Settings → Cellular/Mobile Data
- Select the Global64 eSIM and turn it on manually
- Ensure iOS 26 or later is installed
- Restart the device if necessary
Can users still receive calls, SMS, or OTPs on their home number while abroad?
Yes, but only if they choose to keep their home SIM active along with the travel eSIM. If only the travel eSIM is enabled, calls and SMS to the home number will not be received, although iMessage and FaceTime will still work over data.
