Why can’t I send SMS or activate iMessage with the Vodafone/O2 Travel or O2 SMS Only plans?

These plans are designed for receiving SMS only. Outgoing SMS is not supported, as this restriction helps prevent SMS phishing fraud. Because iMessage activation requires both sending and receiving SMS, it cannot be set up with these plans.

Note: You will still be able to receive unlimited inbound SMS reliably worldwide.

Plans that support outgoing SMS

Based on our current offering, outgoing SMS (and therefore iMessage activation) is available only on:
• Vodafone Standard / Premium
• O2 Standard / Premium
• Three full-service plans

Important note for non-UK users

These full-service plans are designed for UK-registered customers. If you are not UK-registered, these plans may not be suitable. At this time, we don’t offer a non-UK-resident plan that supports iMessage activation.
